gifts for a personal puja

Lakshmi, a gift from Richard.  dotted with red, is heavy with use.  the stone heart has many vistas and faces; from my sister Jeri.  she was here briefly for a funeral.  she crashed on our couch.  it was sweet sleeping on the other couch with her near me and my brother mike and my david asleep  in the upstairs' bedrooms.  for a bit we dreamed together. remembrances of childhood when jeri shared a bed with linda and me.  jeri in the middle.

then, on Sunday, we got to shop in Cambridge at Shalimar, after eb's 'josh' made us waffles for breakfast (yes, we were early!) at their place in Allston.

found this puja pack for a very reasonable $3.99

the contents.  seeds, nuts, spice, wicking, rock cand, lakshmi string, tumeric, candy, honey. this is 'non-edible' and for ritual use only.  "The Family"  Siva, Parvati and Krsna has a sacred holiday calendar on the reverse.

one last view because i think it so pretty.  is it okay to use these in art?  i'm particularly interested in using the dye and the tumeric.  have been told that grinding the tumeric and applying it to my face is what i should do.  the lakshmi string?  can i take it apart?  do i have friends tie it to my wrist in a mala? or do i put it in the art?

Oh, if you are in Central Square, here the link to Shalimar.

From the Archives: "Alberta Hay"

"Alberta Hay"
rice paper, alberta hay, ink, glass, sealed environment 2007
Magnolia/Rocky Neck, Gloucester MA

the Alberta Hay bales in front of the Randomarts Magnolia Studio were about to thaw.  i sliced a 4x6x10" leaf from the bale.  sliced the leaf into 8 sections, watered each leaf, added wildflower seed, sealed the environment.  the Alberta Hay produced several generations of midgies, seed sprouted, tiny flowers formed.  two of these works 'lived' in our kitchen, right above our sunny kitchen table.  two sprouted on my friend Karen's wall.  four lived on the installation walls/trees of the 'then' neighborhood art installation.

this is the only evidence left of the event.  the other leaves were opened and used to enrich other gardens.

Debbie Clarke June 2011

Building an Empire Show!
Debbie Clarke
June 2011
Gloucester MA
location:  Public

The box contains 18 completed packing tape and leaf works.  There are enough stretchers to complete 12 more (2down/1 in process).  This is the work that represents my 'winter' work cycle; which is, usually, spent working with paper, wax, gild.  This year packing tape is the newest material to enter the mix.
This work is rarely shown as it is experimental, the place of dreams, usually on the studio wall until packed away.  This will be a rare light in Gloucester with a glimpse into my winter world where I demand more and more of my materials.  It is challenging to not work with a figurative intent.   When a figure appears, it comes out of the process, as oppossed to imposed upon the surface.

When this cycle is completed I will set up the outside oil studio and continue the black foil series with a focus on the palimpsest.

now, a word from this sponser

Anne. R. Allen's Blog has several recent posts about blogging.  She has several useful tips; such as, PUT YOUR NAME IN YOUR BLOG TITLE!  Duh, I forgot the difference between blogging and journaling.  So, I promptly incorporated my name into the title.  Did you notice the difference?

lots of commonsense stuff.  not rules, just the lay of the land for those of you that are just starting out in the blogging world.

and my new friend Anne is not a facebooker.  i am.  her post about blogging came to my attention through a link to her blog by my good, longtime 'virtual' and real friend Kathleen Valentine.  She is a writer, designer, fabric/thread/yarn wiz.  get to know her too!

Art Supply Run

helping a painter get together an art set up. i sold my father's table top paintbox to a young cook/painter, without wheels. i will make an art supply run to Art Supply w/s next mon or tuesday.

gloucester artists? need anything from the art supply?

from a facebook conversation:

our local art supply could not compete with the wholesalers and his suppliers had high re-order fees. peeps started buying on line. we don't need all the do dads around here. we just need things like tubes of the basic oils, white, black, gesso. basic bristle brush assortment, drawing supplies, supports, economy sizes/prices would work, cuz this is the stuff artists run out of most. btw: our former art supplier Darryl is great at stretching canvas, he might still do this?

another source tells me that the owners of Tootle Loo(?) (the toy store) are asking for input from artists on what they would like to see supplied.

give them a toot.
tell them debbie sent you.

Temporary Space

I will be teaching in the large common area of CABI (Cape Ann Business Initiative). 15 people can work comfortably in the room There are large walls to work on. There is a long hallway with big walls.

Days available for classes/critiques/independant work space: Sunday, all day and evening. tues/thursday nights.

evening drawing classes: 6:30 - 9pm. $35
beginner-advanced. This is drawing 101

sunday: $100 independant study, critiques, directed 5 hour focus, drawing marathon. 10am-3pm

enrollment by portfolio only.
portfolio review: $25 non-refundable. $15 towards material fee of $25.

hmmm...complicated. okay, this is my first draft.

first edit: learn to draw, learn to 'see'. what does the eye really see? how does the eye perceive space? how do we train the hand to follow the eye? learn to see as an artist by learning the common language of visual art: drawing. our journey will be guided by a simple question: what is drawing? informed by an earlier Drawing Center of New York definition circa 1978 "a drawing is anything made on or out of paper".

how am i doing?

This Artist's Journey

Capt Joey of www.goodmorninggloucester.com recently sent me a questionnaire to fill out to be posted on his blog. I gladly obliged. One of the questions was: who is your favorite local artist. My immediate response was 'me'. The more that I thought about my response I realized that there are local painters that I have admired, that have informed and guided my journey as an artist. This post is about my first art teacher Ken Gore. His studio is where I began my long apprenticeship (17 years) to becoming a 'master' artist.

The first Cape Ann artist that I have always admired is landscape painter Ken Gore (1911-1990). Ken was a member of the Northshore Art Association and The Rockport Art Association. He had a studio and gallery on East Main Street across from the The Beacon Marine where he taught painting on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. My father, a student of Ken's, arranged for me to have lessons with Ken. My paintings were not very good, but Ken saw ability in my drawings and encouraged me to seriously pursue art. I was 13.

The photo is Ken's painting "The Willow" that was auctioned through Blackwood March Auctioneers of Essex, MA a few years ago. I chose this painting to accompany this post because of the sheep, as well as his trademark use of the palette knife. Ken told me that when he was first learning to paint he was given a 2" brush to paint and 3 colors: red, yellow, blue and white. The subject? sheep. He could paint them in his sleep. Ken said that anything one could do with a small brush, could be done with a big brush; but, a small brush cannot do the work of a big brush. This advice has guided me through 40 odd years of painting, My preferred brushes are 1-2" bristle chip brushes that can hold alot of paint.

btw: my first lesson was to draw a portrait of another student's husband, then to paint his portrait. the drawing was true to the man's age. the painting made him look so much younger that his wife bought it. i didn't get the money, it was paid to Ken for my very first lesson. In exchange for future lessons, I posed for Ken's classes.

deb.

Wall of Figure and Effect 3.wmv

I gave my drummer boy David a camera. A few nights ago he had to calibrate one of his lights for a performance and used the large "Four Stand" painting. He liked what the lights did to the painting, so he composed some music and synced it to the shots of "Four Stand", throwing in some other paintings to vary the visual image.

Maybe we will have a black room show someday with spots hitting the paintings under his direction.

I like the music and his unique way of seeing of my work.

answers to a few blogging questions

A young friend recently asked me about starting a blog:

1: wordpress? blogger? why?

i use blogger and wordpress. this nest is my blogspot. my wordpress is somethingsketchy.wordpress.com.

i find wordpress a bit clunky and i have been having issues getting my photos to post from my flickr site, as well as from my computer. sometimes blogger is cranky...so i went back to the basic uploader. my suggestion: use the site with the editor that is the easiest for you to use.

i continue this debbieclarke blog, because it is a commitment i made to myself when i started it. a public blog to post art, art thought, engage folk's imagination, share my journey and keep customers up-to-date with any commissions that i may be working on. maybe make a bit of money along the way (NOT) through ads on my site. the monetary benefit dreams have been left long behind. now the only focus is art: what i'm working on, what i'm thinking about, work i am looking at, art materials/process and answering questions along the way. i am surprised by the growing audience of like minded folk that continue this journey with me. thank you for your company! your presence inspires me to put my best foot forward.

2: How do you get people to read/look at your blog?

good question...i'm still trying to figure this one out.

my suggestion is to first figure out your personal objective.

fame? fortune?

set your blog up first. get used to working with it. develop your focus. then let's talk about seo (search engine optimization).

i am not a professional blogger. i am a professional artist using blogger to enrich my art experience...in fact, i think of my blog as an art-in-progress, as varied and colorful as my experience.

following is a site to a pro blogger that has lots of great information. i refer to it frequently as i redesign this nest of mine. have you noticed the judicious use of orange?

the link doesn't allow a share here. it is onecoolsite.com. put onecoolsite in a google search and you will find it. it is a wordpress site.

best,
deb.

ps: if you view this blog regularly and would like to share your thoughts about why and other observations, let me know. and any thoughts about the design of this blog is greatly appreciated.

from the archives: Model in the Studio copyright 1997

I think this is Brenda Tredwell. She was my model and studio assistant for several years. This drawing is turpentine wash on acid free paper. Use blotter paper or absorbant cardboard as a palette, this will reduce the linseed oil. The reverse of this drawing has one small bleedthrough, with no sign of decomp. This drawing pleases me.
Brenda grew up on Monhegan. Her hair flames. She calls herself a rock rat. She modeled for Jamie Wyeth. I recognized her knees and hair that matched the color of Jamie's 'burn barrel'.
enjoy.

Faces I remember 2011

this drawing is constructed with kodak laminate, aluminum leaf, silver leaf, packing tape. the face came through the media, which i defined with charcoal. i have seen this face in european drawings and paintings. i think of hans holbein the younger, da messina, ghirlandiao, titian. i tried to find 'the' drawing that this face came from, but discover it is a composite face drawn from many sources.
i searched 'master drawings' on google this morning. ugh. what a laborious trudge. yes, there were true master drawings and a lot of unmastered drawings. particularly amongst figure/portrait drawings. there is a lot of surface and technique, but no understanding. no bones, no muscles, tendons, ligaments. limp carrots.
my two bits: understand the underlying structure and the surface/technique/style will take care of itself. if you are copying someone's work, study from a master and study the works of the masters that artist studied.

Nude Painters in Gloucester!

checking out search terms that land on my blog.  this one caught my attention:  nude painters in gloucester ma.  roflmao over this one!  haven't seen any nude painters lately, although i often feel naked when i am painting, have not taken my clothes off to paint in the nude.  yet.  maybe soon.  if i can find a warm private studio.  oh.  i have done some nude self portraits, a long time ago.  i'm so naked in them, they embarrass me.  just a few paintings, a drawing or two, with issues connecting the head to the body.

back to nudes.  if someone wants a nude painting, i can do this.  do i want to?  if the price is right.  i will paint whatever you desire.

best,
deb.

ps:  today i teach little fingers to fold origami.  then i go to the Randomarts Gallery and put wires on my paintings.  re-hang the show.  going for critical mass.  must remember to leave room for peeps (i have a lot of work to share/unload).  there will be a free pile for those that wish to get something for nothing.

Randomarts Show

This is what I accomplished yesterday at Randomarts in Magnolia.  Today I will re-hang and adjust the lights.  the wall space gets smaller and smaller everytime I look at my work.  the backwall has my 'new' work:  the drawings from this past year.  need to get some putty to keep some of the work from 'moving' on the wall.  small detail of my favorite work follows.

4 mixed media 'drawings' with oil and leaf on 5x5" panels.  definitely need sticky putty to keep these from wobbling.  selling all work unframed.  folk can spend as much money or not on frames.  and get the art at a very affordable price.  these panels will be under a hundred.  still working out prices.

best to all,
deb.

my visit to The Cape Ann Museum

I received a note from The Cape Ann Museum last week:

"To Gather Together and Keep these Bonds:  Highlights from the Permanent Collection", includes one of your works.

I knew the museum was showing Bruce Hermann's new works and wanted to see them, so I went to the museum on Saturday afternoon.  Bruce's new works are about his experience living on Walker Creek, a response to time, change, landscape.  The paintings contain lots of gold and silver leaf with oil/alkyd.  Bright, light, blond paintings.  My retinal memory is of no specific work.  The show is dominated by a large standing rear view nude, this I had a negative response to.  What struck me about his work? The gold leaf panels, which I read as breaks, frames for other more 'painterly' works.  I saw the panels of leaf and thought 'he did it', he left the gilded panels 'alone'.  other panels, were sanded, scraped back leaving ghosts.

These panels reminded me of work that I have done over the years.  I had a whole wall of 180 small gilded panels, paintings that I distressed, washed, scraped, sanded, still have some, some are re-worked.  and there were a few years of just placing gild on panels with no further ornamentation.  I enjoyed the reflective panels, thought they were 'pretty good', but never took them seriously.  part of my lack of conviction was that the response from others was 'bland'.  so I moved on.  oh, well.  time, place, sleepy magnolia, who the hell will see and who the hell cares?  movement, change, move on.

Next stop the permanent collection, but before I go there, I had to stop in the drawing gallery.  George Demetrios drawings!  with my favorite drawings of the head for his sculpture that is in the museum's courtyard.  I will go back to look again.  Such a gift to see these drawings after a long time of not seeing any of his drawings.

Then the permanent collection and on the far wall, directly in front of me, beyond various 'very good' landscapes, still lifes, watercolors, oils,  on the upper right a small drawing that I had to see.  The vibration drew me to it. What is that?  Oh!  Surpirse, it's me!  a small self portrait in reverse glass with aluminum, silver leaf circa 1995.  The work has held up very well.  My immediate response was:  I really thought I was a 'hot shit' artist then.  Lots of confidence in the work, and the drawing is pretty good.  just wish the pink brown hadn't blobbed on one eye.  oh, well.

I write this to let you know that I am very egocentric about my art.  It catches me off guard.  There are many times I go to art shows, museums and find nothing that 'grabs' me, so I visit with my old familiars.  gothic icons, Tintoretto, Cimabue, reliquaries.  I can appreciate what other artists do, what has come before.  and I wonder about this 'yearning' in my gut for the works of other artists to 'speak' to me.  what is it?  It's the vibration, the energy. and the vibration I respond to is in my work, the yearning is for my work, it's what I do.  so I am left with the certainty that the only place this yearning will ever settle, is in my studio, in my process.

Have you ever walked into a room where an art work has so totally caught your attention that you immediately ask "Who did that?  It is fantastic!".  Then your question is answered with "You did!"  "I did?, I don't remember doing it."  but, there's my signature, so I must have.  What a gift, to see my work removed from my ego, just to be re-introduced to myself.

If you are an artist, may you have this gift from the universe, to be re-introduced to yourself.  Has this happened to you?  are you a bit egocentric in your art?  If not, you should be, it keeps the terrors at bay.

best,
deb.

Out of Dream Time into Art Time

personal, communal and psychic history are prominent themes in my work.  recent dreams have provided me a framework for the further development of this theme.  the work will be visual, written, spoken, video, whatever and everything i can think of to define a specific family tree.  a tree with a garden that is just the earth beneath it and the sky above it, no more no less, but the volume is vast.  a mandala of sorts... here's the first flush of an outline.
